GMT400 (1988–1998) Steering Box Adjustment

If you’re upgrading the steering shaft on your OBS truck and still have play in the wheel, the slack is usually in the steering box.

Here’s a fast adjustment method that removes excess play without causing binding.

Steering Box Adjustment (Quick Method)

STEP 1: Locate the adjuster screw and jam nut on top of the steering box. This is labelled as the “Sector shaft adjusting screw below”.

STEP 2: Loosen the jam nut several full turns to free the adjuster screw. This lock nut secures the adjustment in place and prevents it from turning during operation, so it must be backed off enough to allow the screw to move independently.

STEP 3: Use an Allen key to turn the adjuster screw clockwise until it lightly bottoms out. This seats the internal gear fully without applying pressure. Do not torque or force it—stop as soon as it makes contact!

STEP 4: Back the adjuster screw off (⅛–¼ turn max) from the seated position. This slight back-off relieves preload on the internal gear while keeping the adjustment tight and responsive.

STEP 5: Hold the adjuster screw steady with the Allen key to prevent it from turning, then tighten the jam nut securely against the housing. This locks the adjustment in place and preserves the setting you just established.

:warning: Critical Notes

  • Do not overtighten — this will cause binding and poor return-to-center

  • This method works best when your steering box isn’t completely worn out. Use minimal adjustment (⅛–¼ turn max after seating).

  • If it needs more than that, the box is likely worn out. If you need the steering gearbox, consider the Redhead Steering box. Avoid a steering box from the autoparts store as most are low quality remans.

  • Always test steering lock-to-lock with the front end off the ground after adjustment

  • If steering feels tight or doesn’t return properly, back it off slightly more

:nut_and_bolt: When to Do This

  • After installing a new steering shaft

  • If you still have steering play at the wheel

  • Before replacing the steering box

Result

Tighter steering feel
Reduced play in the wheel
No binding when done correctly

Clean, simple fix that takes a few minutes and can make a noticeable difference on GMT400 trucks.
