Fixing sloppy OBS/GMT400 steering – what actually matters

’88–’98 C/K, Tahoe, Suburban, etc. If your wheel’s got a quarter turn of “nothing,” this is the usual mess.

Start at the steering shaft.

Most guys jump to the box and ignore this.

  • Grab the shaft, rock it by hand while someone wiggles the wheel
  • If you feel clunk or see the rag joint flexing, it’s junk
  • 88-94 can follow this shaft replacement guide.
  • 95+ can get the Borgeson or Cunningham shaft, this fixes a lot of “mystery” slop
  • If you’re broke, at least replace the rag joint with a decent repair kit

Idler arm + idler bracket

  • Cheap idlers die in 10–20k and you’re back to wandering
  • Use Moog Problem Solver or AC Delco Professional, not the “Advantage” line
  • Replace the idler bracket with it, the bracket egg-shapes and flexes
  • Have someone saw the wheel left/right while you watch the idler – any visible wobble = replace

Pitman arm and center link

Don’t just look, feel it.

  • With the truck on the ground, engine off, have someone rock the wheel
  • Watch the pitman arm where it splines to the box and to the center link
  • If the box shaft moves but the arm lags, it’s done
  • Any vertical play in the center link and you’re chasing your tail until it’s fixed

Steering box – last, not first

You can adjust the box’s adjuster screw. Guide here.

  • Adjusting a worn-out box just makes it bind on-center and still feel like crap
  • If everything else is tight and you’ve still got play, then do the box
  • RedHead or Blue Top if you can swing it; reman chain-store boxes are a coin toss
  • If you do adjust: tiny 1/8 turns, test drive, do NOT bury the screw

Frame around the box

If the frame moves, none of the rest matters.

  • Look for cracks around the steering box bolt holes
  • Have someone rock the wheel while you watch the box – if the frame flexes, it’ll never feel right
  • Weld the cracks and throw a brace/plate kit on (Offroad Design, Cognito, or DIY plate)
  • Don’t waste money on a fancy box until this is handled

Once all that’s tight and aligned right, these trucks actually steer decent!
