8.1L Vortec Spark Plugs: ACDelco 41-983 at .045" Gap — and What to Do When You Break Your Wires

Doing plugs on the 8.1L Vortec — here’s what I’m running and a tip for anyone who snaps their wires mid-job.


Plugs: ACDelco 41-983, gapped at .045"

I’m running ACDelco Iridium 41-983s gapped to .045". These plugs often come pre-gapped from the factory around .060", which is too wide for an older ignition system. Check the gap before you install — don’t assume it’s correct out of the box. I noticed a big difference in going from .060" to .045" - the truck seemed to start better, idle better, and the hot idle lowered as well!

I truthfully think if you own an 8.1L Vortec you should be doing plugs and wires every year, regardless of the mileage. These engines are known to eat plugs due to the internal PCV system, and old plugs make a rough cold start that can mask or amplify other noises (valvetrain chatter, for example). If you’ve already swapped out the factory intake manifold and deleted the PCV - you’ll likely have better plug life, but for me I am doing the plugs every year (stock engine, stock manifolds).


Wires: ACDelco 9748KK this time — here’s why

Last set was NGK. They seemed flimsy and didn’t last as long as I’d have liked (even with the factory heat shields on). When removing wires, 2 broke on me. Went with OEM ACDelco 9748KK wires this time around and hoping they hold up better. Will update next year when the plugs get changed again.

When you do plugs and wires on these trucks, take your time on the wires. They can be brittle with age and heat — especially near the exhaust manifolds. I would recommend to always have a set of wires handy when doing plugs, as these big blocks get hot!


Pro tip: LS wires fit in a pinch

Last plug change this spring I broke two 8.1L wires while doing plugs. Unfortunately I needed the truck running that weekend to haul a truck on a trailer, and got caught with 2 broken wires on a Friday afternoon. I called around, and did NOT find any 8.1L wires locally. I even checked Amazon, and found wires to be 3 days away. I didn’t have any other option, and so I decided to do some investigating and found out that LS wires will fit.

I had a set kicking around from another build; just cheap red LS wires off Amazon.
I ran the set for several heat cycles on a short tow trip without issue. A few things to know:

  • LS wires are about 2 inches shorter than the 8.1L wires — just enough to reach, but there’s less slack. Not ideal, but if you are in a pinch this could easily fix your rig. In my case it meant that my planned tow trip could still happen!

  • The ones I had were red (see pic posted below) — easy to find, widely available and cheap. You can get them here.

  • A heat shield sleeve would help since routing near the manifolds is tighter with the shorter length, but in a pinch the wires worked for me. If I had to do a long trip, I would definitely add ceramic heat shields near the manifolds.

This isn’t a permanent solution, but if you’re in a bind on a weekend and need the truck running, grab a set of LS wires and you’ll be fine until the correct wires arrive. LS wires are readily stocked everywhere - 8.1 ones are not!!


Wire checklist while you’re in there:

  • Check boots for cracks or heat damage, especially near the exhaust manifolds
  • Use dielectric grease on boots only — not on plug threads or electrodes
  • If wires are original or unknown age on a high-mileage truck, replace them while you’re doing plugs anyway
  • Check for misfire codes after — even a soft misfire that doesn’t set a code can cause rough cold start behavior
