Classic Chevy truck frames are famous for surface rust — it’s just part of owning a 50–70 year old truck. Here’s how to address frame rust properly.
Types of Frame Rust
- Surface rust – Orange discoloration, metal still solid → clean and coat
- Scale rust – Pitted, flaking metal but structurally sound → wire brush, converter, coat
- Penetrating rust – Metal is thin, flexy, or has holes → needs repair welding
Best Products for Surface and Scale Rust:
The Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Rust Reformer & Primer Spray is excellent for frame work. It chemically converts rust (iron oxide) into a black iron tannate primer layer. No need to sand to bare metal — just remove loose scale.
For heavy scale areas, use a wire wheel on an angle grinder first, then apply rust converter while the metal is still clean.
Frame Coating After Conversion
After treating rust, apply a chassis black or rubberized undercoating:
- POR-15 for serious restoration work
- Rust-Oleum Chassis Saver for good budget protection
- Spray rubberized undercoat for quick coverage
Important: The 3M Weld-Thru Coating II is essential if you’re welding any frame brackets or doing structural repairs — it keeps bare weld zones protected.
