Everyone’s got an opinion on the GMT800 engines, so let’s hear the real-world takes instead of the same recycled wisdom.
The quick version from our GMT800 engine guide: the 5.3 (LM7) is the do-everything sweet spot, the 6.0 (LQ4/LQ9) is the tow-and-build king, the 4.8 (LR4) is the underrated budget workhorse, and the 8.1 (L18) big-block is for serious hauling.
But spec sheets aren’t the same as living with one. So:
- Which engine is in your truck, and what year/model?
- What do you actually use it for — daily, towing, work, or a build?
- Mileage now, and what’s failed (or held up)?
- If you were buying again tomorrow, same engine or different?
Post your combo below. The goal is to help the next person figure out which one to hunt for.
