The 2014–2018 K2XX Silverado/Sierra has factory trailer sway control built into the StabiliTrak system. Here’s how it works and what to do if you need more.
Factory Trailer Sway Control (Integrated Trailer Brake Control):
The K2XX equipped with the factory Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) uses wheel sensors to detect trailer sway and automatically applies trailer brakes to correct it.
How It Detects Sway:
The yaw rate sensor in the truck detects when the trailer is inducing oscillating motion. When sway is detected, the ITBC independently applies the trailer brakes (not the truck brakes) to straighten the trailer.
Does the K2XX StabiliTrak Help?
Yes – the factory StabiliTrak system also applies individual wheel brakes and may reduce throttle when it detects sway. This is effective for mild sway.
For Serious Sway Prevention:
Factory systems are reactive. Prevention is better:
- Correct tongue weight: 10–15% of trailer weight on the hitch ball
- Weight distribution hitch: For trailers over 5,000 lbs tongue weight
- Anti-sway bar (friction or electric): Adds mechanical resistance to sway
Anti-Sway Bar Option:
An aftermarket anti-sway bar (Reese Towpower or similar) provides mechanical sway resistance. This is recommended for tall trailers and windy conditions.
Tire Pressure:
Low tire pressure (especially rear) significantly increases trailer sway susceptibility. Maintain factory-specified pressure.
Brake Controller Setting:
Proper brake gain on your controller means the trailer brakes come on quickly and firmly, which helps prevent sway from developing.
Proportional Brake Controller – The right brake controller is one of your best sway prevention tools.
