Always Verify With Your Door Placard:
These are nominal numbers. Your specific truck may be rated differently based on options, axle ratio, and GCWR.
The 4L80E Advantage:
The 2500HD 6.0L comes with the 4L80E heavy-duty automatic, which is rated for significantly more torque than the 4L60E in 1500s. This is why the 2500HD can tow so much more.
Real World Towing Tips:
- Monitor trans temp: Even with the 4L80E, install an external transmission cooler for sustained towing
- Proper axle ratio: The 3.73 ratio is standard, 4.10 is ideal for towing
- Weight distribution hitch: For trailers over 5,000 lbs tongue weight
- Brake controller: For trailer electric brakes
Transmission Temperature:
The 4L80E should stay under 220°F sustained. Over 250°F = stop and cool down.
Mishimoto Transmission Cooler – One of the best upgrades for any towing 2500HD.
Payload Reminder:
The 2500HD payload (typically 2,500–3,500 lbs) limits how much tongue weight you can put in the bed. Don’t forget this when calculating your total load.
