Towing Capacity GMT400 2500 with 5.7 – Real World Numbers

The 1988–1998 GMT400 Silverado/Sierra 2500 with the 5.7L TBI or Vortec engine is a capable tow rig, but what are the real-world numbers? Here’s the full breakdown.

Official Factory Towing Ratings (2500 Series, 5.7L):

Configuration Max Tow (Conventional)
2WD Regular Cab, Long Box 9,700 lbs
4WD Crew Cab 8,000 lbs
5th Wheel Equipped 12,000 lbs

What Affects Your Actual Capacity:

  • GVWR on door placard
  • 4L60E vs 4L80E transmission (HD package)
  • Axle ratio (3.73 vs 4.10 makes a difference)
  • Tow/haul mode availability (late model trucks)

Real World with a 5.7L:
The TBI 5.7L is rated for about 210 HP and 300 ft-lbs of torque. In a 2500, it can comfortably handle:

  • 8,000–10,000 lb trailer with proper gearing
  • Transmission temps need monitoring over 8,000 lbs

Transmission Cooling is Critical:
When towing regularly with the 5.7L and 4L60E, add a transmission cooler. The factory cooler inside the radiator isn’t sufficient for sustained heavy towing.

Mishimoto Transmission Cooler – Excellent auxiliary cooler that significantly reduces transmission temperature under load.

Best Axle Ratio for Towing:
The 4.10 rear axle ratio (available on 2500/3500 HD packages) is the preferred ratio for towing with the 5.7L. The 3.73 works but the engine works harder.

Practical Tips:

  • Never exceed GCWR (truck + trailer combined weight)
  • Weight distribution hitch for trailers over 5,000 lbs tongue weight
  • Trailer brakes required for trailers over most state limits (usually 3,000 lbs)
