StabiliTrak Error on GMT900 – Common Causes & Reset

Seeing a “Service StabiliTrak” or “StabiliTrak Off” message on your 2007–2013 GMT900 Silverado or Sierra? You’re not alone – this is one of the most common warning messages on this platform. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it.

What Is StabiliTrak?
StabiliTrak is GM’s electronic stability control (ESC) system. It uses wheel speed sensors, a yaw rate sensor, and steering angle sensor to detect and correct understeer/oversteer. When it detects a problem with any of these inputs, it throws a warning.

Most Common Causes:

1. Wheel Speed Sensor (ABS Sensor) Failure
The most frequent cause. A failing wheel speed sensor gives the StabiliTrak system bad input, triggering the warning. You’ll usually also see an ABS light with this one.

2. Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Out of Calibration
After an alignment or steering work, the SAS may need recalibration. In some cases, a battery disconnect can cause the SAS to lose its calibration.

3. Throttle Body / TAC System Issues
On the 5.3L and 6.0L, StabiliTrak is tied to the TAC (Throttle Actuator Control) system. A dirty throttle body or failing TAC can trigger StabiliTrak errors simultaneously.

4. Low Brake Fluid or ABS Module Issue
The ABS module shares data with StabiliTrak. Low brake fluid or ABS module issues can cascade to a StabiliTrak warning.

Diagnosis:
Use an OBD2 scanner to pull specific codes. Common StabiliTrak-related codes:

  • C0561, C0562 – System disabled
  • C0040, C0041 – Wheel speed sensor
  • U0415 – Invalid data from ABS
  • P0641 – Sensor reference voltage

Innova 5310 OBD2 Scanner with ABS/SRS Capability – Can read ABS and chassis codes that a basic code reader won’t catch.

Reset Procedure:

  1. Turn ignition off
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal for 10 minutes
  3. Reconnect and clear codes
  4. Test drive – if warning returns, use scanner to read specific fault codes

Steering Angle Sensor Reset:
After alignment or battery replacement, SAS recalibration: drive straight at 25+ mph, turn the wheel gently left and right a few times, then straighten out. This often recalibrates automatically.
