Running hot on a Squarebody is common. The factory cooling system on 1973–1987 C10, K10, and Suburban trucks was marginal from the factory — especially with a 350 or 454 under the hood.
SYMPTOMS
- Temp gauge climbing past the halfway mark at idle or in traffic
- Coolant overflow after shutdown
- Steam from under the hood
- Heater blowing cool air while engine runs hot
CAUSES
- Stock 2-row aluminum radiator inadequate for modified engines
- Water pump impeller erosion on high-mileage pumps
- Thermostat stuck partially closed
- Air pockets in system after improper fill procedure
- Collapsed lower radiator hose under suction
- Clogged radiator from 40+ years of scale buildup
FIX
- Replace with a 3-row or 4-row brass/copper core radiator
- Install a new 160°F or 180°F thermostat depending on climate
- Replace water pump — AC Delco or Melling are reliable choices
- Flush system with a quality flush kit before filling
- Use a 50/50 mix of Dex-Cool or green coolant depending on year
- Check lower hose for softness — replace if it collapses under squeeze
- Add a coolant overflow tank if not already present
PREVENTION
- Flush coolant every 2 years regardless of mileage
- Inspect belts and hoses annually
- Run a quality thermostat — cheap thermostats fail partially open or closed
- If you have a 454 or built 350, upgrade the fan clutch or go electric
COMMON MISTAKES
- Skipping the air bleed procedure after refill
- Running without a thermostat — this kills flow velocity
- Buying a cheap eBay radiator that fails within a season
- Ignoring a soft lower hose until it collapses and cavitates the pump
