Sometimes I’ve got good luck at Pick and Pull. It just kind of really depends on time of day, time of year that you go.
If you’re gonna try and go and you need a bunch of parts, it’s always best to write down what you need beforehand and try and look up and plan which yards have better selection.
In my area it can be picked through on the weekends, because everybody’s going on Saturdays, Sundays. The best times of the week, from what I’ve heard is Tuesday to Thursday during the day. You can get in there anytime with that and get first dibs on some of the new units coming through . You get the new stock that’s there during the week.
The most recent find that I got is this Woodview automotive dash conversion kit. It’s off of a two-door truck or an X-cab, if you will, because the switches are for only a single window + passenger window. So my initial thoughts was, oh heck yeah, I’m gonna grab that!!!
I actually found it in a green ex cab truck with a grey interior. It seemed to be stashed in the back, who knows. Either way, I made up my mind that it was coming home with me to add to the “rare parts stash”. The sticker on it was from WoodView Automotive Trim- so I am thinking this used to be a kit that you could purchase to add woodgrain to a bezel.
I’m just gonna keep it because it’ll be perfect on a future two-door build. I made up my mind, I’m gonna save my money up for a bit and try to get me into a nice OBS two-door Yukon. I really do like the Yukon GT two door.
The one I really want would be the burgundy two-door because that matches my burgundy '98 71 perfectly. But we’ll see, the right one will hopefully come along sooner than later. I’m hoping in future I’ll have good luck on a decently optioned burgundy GT but we’ll see, that might be a big ask!
I have a bit of work to do in cleaning up the dash bezel and switches but overall pretty happy with it. Truck can follow along later!
My game plan at Pick-n-Pull is normally to try to get in there with a list of parts that I need for my projects and I just do a couple mass trips where I’m in there for three, four hours just grabbing whatever I can find and carry out lol. I’m always trying to grab a few extra things that I can sell on the way back to at least cover a little bit of my time and most importantly my parts cost!
My first trip this year was $300 in parts, which had me coming back with a keep list of alternators, trim pieces, underhood OBS lighting etc. The sell list included flares, which cost me $35 ea, and I sold all 4 for $300. Obviously not going to get rich with this method, but at least I can cover the cost of my parts.
The second item I sold from that run was an OBS Cupholder for $40, so technically I am up on parts from the first run (which is a good thing)
I’ll keep the alternators, underhood light, trim peices and hope to sell the 07-13 underhood storage box. I’m hoping it sells for $100-150 and then I’d be up on parts while keeping what I need for my projects!
The second run had me at $200, and I am going to mess around with a few Blazer DICS to see if I can get them wired up to an OBD2 plug to display temp/compass. Probably the consoles wired up and aim to keep 1, sell the other one type deal!
Anyways, thanks and hopefully everybody enjoys their Saturday!
