Upgrading the lighting on your full-size truck is one of the most functional and visible improvements you can make. From headlight replacements to LED light bars and rock lights, here’s a full guide.
Headlight Upgrades
LED Headlight Bulb Drop-In (Easiest)
For trucks with replaceable halogen bulbs, LED drop-in kits are the fastest upgrade. No housing modifications needed.
The SYLVANIA 9005 LED Headlight Bulbs are a proven drop-in for most GM trucks using 9005/HB3 high beams — significant brightness improvement over stock halogens.
Compatible with: Most GMT400 through K2XX trucks using 9005, 9006, H11, or H13 bulbs.
Note: Some trucks have HID (projector) housings from the factory — do NOT put LED bulbs in a halogen-designed projector housing; it affects beam pattern and blinds oncoming drivers.
Full HID Retrofit
For maximum output, a full HID projector retrofit into the existing headlight housing gives the best beam quality. This is a more involved mod but produces excellent results.
Light Bars & Auxiliary Lights
LED light bars have become a staple on lifted and off-road trucks.
Roof mount / hood mount: The Nilight 25" 162W LED Light Bar is a popular windshield/roof bracket option — suitable for off-road night use, amber fog mode available on some models.
Grille-mount pods / ditch lights: 3" round or square pods mounted to the A-pillar or bumper provide wide spread lighting for close-in off-road use.
Relay wiring is mandatory for any light bar — do not wire directly to a switch; use a relay triggered by the switch to protect your wiring harness.
Rock Lights / Underbody LEDs
For trucks that go off-road or just want a custom look, underbody/rock lights add a dramatic effect.
The Nilight RGB Rock Lights 10-Pod Kit mounts under the rocker panels and differentials — app-controlled color changing, music sync, and multiple patterns. Completely waterproof for off-road use.
DRL / Daytime Running Lights
Many owners upgrade their DRL strips to LED switchbacks (white for DRL, amber for turn signal). Popular on GMT900 through T1XX trucks — gives a custom “angel eye” look.
Lighting Laws & DOT Compliance
- Light bars must be covered when driving on public roads in most states — an uncovered white light bar facing forward is technically illegal
- LED headlight kits must be DOT-compliant for street use
- Tinted headlight film is illegal in many jurisdictions if it reduces beam output below DOT specs
Check your local laws before making changes. Off-road use has different rules than daily street driving.
