LB7 (2001–2004) — The Original
- First-gen Duramax — 300 hp, 520 lb-ft from the factory
- Well-known injector failure problem — check if they’ve been replaced (GM paid for them)
- If injectors are good: solid engine with excellent aftermarket support
- No DPF, no DEF, no EGR — simple by modern standards
- Weak points: injectors, injection lines, up-pipe cracks on LLY (slightly different than LB7)
- Best use: budget entry into Duramax ownership, great for built high-power diesel
LBZ (2006–2007) — The Sweet Spot
- Most popular Duramax generation among enthusiasts
- 360 hp / 650 lb-ft from factory — largest factory output increase in the lineup at that time
- No DPF, no DEF, no EGR filter — cleaner emissions than LML but no regeneration issues
- Allison 1000 with 6-speed — holds more power than 5-speed LB7/LLY
