Installing a trailer brake controller in your 2014–2018 K2XX Silverado/Sierra is straightforward thanks to the factory-prewired harness options. Here’s how to do it.
Factory ITBC Option:
If your K2XX was ordered with the Integrated Trailer Brake Control (ITBC) option, it already has a brake controller built into the dash. The DIC menu allows gain adjustment.
Checking If Your Truck Has ITBC:
Look for a “Trailer Brake” option in your DIC (Driver Information Center) display. If it’s there, you have factory ITBC. If not, you need to add an aftermarket controller.
Adding an Aftermarket Brake Controller:
Proportional Trailer Brake Controller – Compatible with Silverado, Sierra – Plugs into a bracket under the dash. Requires connecting to 4 wires.
Required Connections for Aftermarket Controller:
The factory K2XX has a pre-run harness for brake controller installation:
- 12V constant (white wire in brake connector area)
- Ground (black)
- Brake pedal input (red – 12V when brake pressed)
- Output to trailer brake wire (blue – runs to 7-pin trailer connector)
K2XX Factory Brake Controller Harness:
Many dealers can add the factory ITBC option by installing the module and adding it to the BCM options. This is the cleanest OEM solution.
Gain Setting:
On a level road at 25 mph, apply the brakes moderately. The trailer should brake slightly ahead of the truck without locking. Adjust gain until this is achieved.
Does your K2XX have factory ITBC or did you add an aftermarket controller?
