Paint peeling on the 2014–2018 K2XX Silverado/Sierra is a documented issue, particularly on certain colors and body panels. Here’s where it happens and what to do about it.
Most Common Areas for Paint Peeling:
- Roof (especially on trucks that are washed frequently or parked in sun)
- Hood leading edge (rock chips that lead to peeling)
- Door window frames/trim
- Tailgate lower edge
- Mirror housings
Root Cause:
The K2XX generation (particularly 2014–2016) had documented issues with the clear coat adhesion to the basecoat on some panels. GM extended the paint warranty in some cases.
The GM Paint Warranty:
GM’s original factory paint warranty covers 3 years/36,000 miles. For documented peeling issues, some owners were able to get coverage beyond this. If your truck is within warranty or there’s an extended coverage, contact your dealer.
DIY Touch-Up for Small Areas:
For minor chips and small peeling:
- Clean and dry the area thoroughly
- Use touch-up paint pen matched to your truck’s color code
- Seal with clear coat pen
For Larger Peeling Areas:
Paint protection film or a full repaint is the correct fix for significant peeling. There is no quick fix for delaminated clear coat.
Prevention Going Forward:
Chemical Guys HydroSlick SiO2 Ceramic Coating – Applying a ceramic coating protects the existing clear coat from UV damage and environmental fallout that accelerates clear coat failure.
Warning Signs:
Cloudy, milky, or cracked clear coat means failure is coming. Address it early before the basecoat starts to show.
