Power window regulator failures are a fairly common issue on 2007–2013 GMT900 Silverado and Sierra trucks, especially in the front doors. When the motor or regulator fails, the window will drop into the door, move slowly, or not work at all. Here’s how to DIY the repair.
Symptoms of a Failing Window Regulator:
- Window moves slowly or makes grinding noise
- Window drops into the door when hitting a bump
- Window only works in one direction
- Window doesn’t respond at all
- You can hear the motor running but window doesn’t move
Diagnosis:
- If motor runs but window doesn’t move: regulator cable/track failure
- If no motor noise: motor or switch failure
- If window is stuck down: most likely regulator failure
Replacement Part:

Tools Needed:
- Trim removal tool (panel popper)
- T30 Torx bit
- 10mm socket
- Flathead screwdriver
Step-by-Step Replacement:
- Remove door panel (carefully pry out clips with trim tool)
- Disconnect wiring harness and window switch
- Support the window glass with tape to keep it from dropping
- Remove the window glass bolts (usually two 10mm bolts through plastic clips)
- Lift glass up and secure or remove
- Remove regulator mounting bolts (usually 4x T30 Torx)
- Disconnect motor electrical connector
- Pull regulator out through access hole
- Install new regulator, torque bolts to spec
- Reconnect glass and motor connector
- Test before reinstalling door panel
Time Required: 1.5–2.5 hours for first time
Tips:
- Label or photograph connector locations before removal
- Have a helper hold the glass while you disconnect it
- The passenger side is essentially the same process
