GMT900 Cabin Air Filter Retrofit

GMT900 Cabin Air Filter Retrofit

2007–2014 Silverado • Sierra • Tahoe • Yukon • Suburban • Avalanche

Many GMT900 trucks and SUVs were built without a cabin air filter, even though the HVAC box was designed to accept one. GM removed the filter during production to reduce cost, but left the molded housing in place — which means you can easily add it yourself.

This retrofit converts your truck into a serviceable filtered HVAC system just like newer vehicles.

Watch the Install First

Why Do This Upgrade

Adding a cabin air filter provides immediate benefits:

  • Filters dust, pollen, and debris entering the cab

  • Reduces musty HVAC odors

  • Keeps evaporator and blower motor cleaner

  • Improves interior air quality

  • Makes future maintenance simple

Trucks driven on gravel roads, construction sites, or rural areas benefit the most.

  • Cabin air filter

  • Retrofit access door

  • Retaining screw

  • Foam seal

Installation Overview

The HVAC housing already has a factory-marked outline showing where the filter belongs.

  1. Remove the passenger-side lower dash panel.

  2. Locate the HVAC box behind the glovebox area.

  3. Find the rectangular molded outline in the plastic housing.

  4. Carefully cut along the outline using a utility knife or rotary tool.

  5. Vacuum debris from inside the heater box.

  6. Slide the cabin air filter into the slot.

  7. Install the retrofit access cover.

  8. Reinstall interior panels.

The filter slides into factory alignment grooves, so positioning is straightforward.

Tools Needed

  • 7mm socket or nut driver

  • Utility knife, oscillating tool, or Dremel

  • Vacuum or compressed air

  • Flashlight

Difficulty

Time: 30–60 minutes
Skill Level: Beginner–Intermediate

You are cutting plastic, but GM intentionally left this section pre-marked for a filter installation.

Maintenance After Retrofit

Once installed, replace the cabin air filter every:

  • 12 months normal driving

  • 6 months in dusty environments

Future replacements take less than 5 minutes.

Final Thoughts

This is one of the highest-value upgrades you can do on a GMT900 platform. It improves comfort, protects HVAC components, and costs very little compared to the long-term benefit.

If your truck has never had filtered cabin air, the difference is noticeable immediately.
