GMT900 4WD Transfer Case Problems – How to Diagnose

4WD engagement issues are a common complaint on 2007–2013 GMT900 trucks. The NP246 and NP263 transfer cases used in these trucks have a few well-known failure points. Here’s how to diagnose and fix the most common problems.

Common 4WD Issues on GMT900:

  1. 4WD won’t engage at all
  2. 4WD engages but immediately drops out
  3. 4WD light flashes or blinks
  4. Grinding or clunking when engaging 4WD
  5. Service 4WD message in the DIC

The Most Common Cause: Encoder Motor
The transfer case uses an electric encoder motor to shift between 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. These motors are known to fail, especially in high-mileage trucks.

Symptoms of a Failed Encoder Motor:

  • Service 4WD message
  • 4WD selector light flashes and won’t engage
  • Grinding noise when trying to shift
  • 4WD works intermittently

Replacement Encoder Motor:
Transfer Case Encoder Motor – Fits 2003–2010 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade – Replaces GM part 19125571, direct fit replacement.

How to Replace the Encoder Motor:

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
  2. Raise vehicle and support on jackstands
  3. Locate the encoder motor on the transfer case (driver side rear)
  4. Disconnect the 7-wire connector
  5. Remove 3 mounting bolts
  6. Install new motor, torque bolts to spec
  7. Reconnect and test

Other Causes:

  • TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) failure – less common but possible
  • Wiring harness damage (check for chafing near encoder motor)
  • Transfer case chain wear (clunking, grinding)

Diagnosis Tips:

  • Pull codes with an OBD2 scanner – codes C0374, C0379, C0387 point to encoder motor
  • Check the 4WD fuse (20A) in the underhood fuse box
  • Inspect encoder motor wiring for corrosion
