Fuel system problems on a 1999–2007 Silverado are almost always caused by one of three things: a failing fuel pump module, a clogged fuel filter, or a failing pressure regulator. These trucks have the fuel pump inside the tank — diagnosis and replacement requires understanding the system.
SYMPTOMS OF FUEL PUMP FAILURE
- Long crank times — especially first start of the day
- Stalling at highway speeds under load
- Rough running that clears up then comes back
- Engine cuts out and restarts spontaneously
- P0087 (fuel rail pressure low) or P0230 codes
DIAGNOSIS
- Test fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail
- Key-on pressure: 58–64 psi (no start)
- Running: 52–58 psi at idle
- WOT: should hold above 50 psi
- If pressure drops below 45 under load — pump is failing
THE FUEL PUMP MODULE
- GMT800 fuel pump is inside the tank — accessed from the top
- The pump, fuel level sender, and strainer are all one module
- Replace the entire module — not just the pump
- AC Delco or Delphi are the OEM suppliers
- Airtex and Carter are acceptable budget replacements
REPLACEMENT TIPS
- Drop the tank or use the access panel under the back seat (if equipped on crew cab)
- Disconnect the fuel line at the rail — depress the white quick-connect tab
- Note the orientation of the pump module before removing — arrow points forward
- Use the correct lock ring tool — avoid using a punch and hammer
- Clean the tank opening before installing the new module
