GMT400 / OBS Common Problems & Known Fixes Master List

The GMT400 generation (1988–1998) is one of the most DIY-friendly truck platforms ever made. Robust, parts-everywhere, and relatively simple electronics. That said, there are known problem areas every owner should be aware of. This is the master list.

Engine Issues

TBI (1988–1995): Throttle Body Injection

MPFI Spider Injector Failure (Vortec 4.3 V6, Vortec 5.0/5.7 1996–1998)

  • Symptom: Rough idle, misfire, hard start, raw fuel smell
  • Fix: Replace the MPFI central sequential fuel injection unit (CSFI) — also called the spider injector

Oil Pressure Sender Failure

  • Symptom: Oil pressure gauge reading zero or erratic
  • Fix: Replace the oil pressure sending unit behind the distributor — this is the single most common gauge failure on OBS trucks

Distributor Cap & Rotor Wear

  • Symptom: Rough idle, hesitation, misfire
  • Fix: Replace cap and rotor every 30K miles on distributor-based engines; check the coil wire as well

Transmission Issues

4L60E (1993–1998)

3rd to 4th Gear Slip / No 4th Gear

  • Cause: Worn 3-4 clutch pack; this is the single most common 4L60E failure
  • Fix: Rebuild or replacement trans

Converter Shudder

  • Symptom: Vibration at light throttle 40–55 MPH (TCC engagement)
  • Fix: Drain and refill with Dexron VI; add Lubegard Shudder Fixx

4L80E (Heavy Duty trucks)

Generally more durable. Pressure control solenoid failure is a common electrical issue.

Electrical Issues

Instrument Cluster Problems

  • Tachometer failure is common — often a cold solder joint inside the cluster
  • Speedometer inaccuracy — check speed sensor first

Power Window Motor Failure

  • Regulator arms wear out; replacement regulators are inexpensive and a 1-hour DIY job

Blower Motor Resistor

  • Fan only works on high speed = dead resistor. Located behind the glove box.

Suspension Issues

Front Ball Joint Wear

  • Symptom: Clunking over bumps, wandering steering
  • Fix: Upper and lower ball joints — both sides while you’re in there

Front Coil Spring Sag

  • On 2WD models: front end sits low after 150K+ miles
  • Fix: Replacement coil springs or quick-strut upgrade

Body & Rust Issues

Cab Corner Rust

  • The OBS body is particularly prone to cab corner rot — check lower rear of both doors
  • Reproduction cab corners are widely available

Tailgate Cable Failure

Cooling System

Intake Manifold Gasket Failure (5.7L/5.0L)

This is one of the most expensive repairs to ignore — coolant mixing with oil destroys bearings fast.

Preventive Maintenance Priorities

  1. Check intake manifold gaskets at 100K (5.7L)
  2. Service 4L60E fluid at 60K (don’t flush — drain and refill)
  3. Replace distributor cap and rotor every 30K
  4. Inspect ball joints and front end at 100K
  5. Replace coolant every 2 years (green Dexcool alternative preferred)
