GMT400 (1988–1998) door panels commonly crack, fade, and have broken handles. Replacing them is a DIY-friendly job. Here’s how.
Common GMT400 Door Panel Issues:
- Armrest pad cracking and crazing
- Window switch panels cracking or snapping off
- Interior door handle plastic breaking
- Fade from sunlight exposure
- Pull strap attachment points breaking
Door Panel Removal:
- Roll down the window before starting
- Remove the door pull screw (usually hidden under a cover near the door pull)
- Pop off the window crank (if manual) with a crank removal tool
- Remove armrest screws if applicable
- Pop off door panel clips around the perimeter with a trim removal tool
- Lift panel up and off — disconnect any electrical connectors (power windows, locks, mirror)
Replacement Options:
OEM-Style Reproductions – LMC Truck offers reproduction GMT400 door panels that match the factory look. These are the cleanest restoration option.
Resurfacing – Sand, prime with adhesion promoter, and repaint with SEM Trim Black or a custom color.
Vinyl Wrap – Door panels can be wrapped in new vinyl for a custom look without full replacement.
Door Panel Clips
Always replace the plastic clips when reinstalling. Reusing broken clips means the panel won’t seat flat. A bag of universal door panel retainers is $10 and ensures a secure fit.
While you have the panel off, treat the door cavity with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer if any surface rust is visible.
