GMT400 Distributor Failure Symptoms – How to Tell

The 1988–1998 GMT400 trucks with the 5.7 TBI or early Vortec engines use a distributor for ignition. Distributor failures are relatively common on high-mileage trucks. Here’s how to diagnose a failing distributor.

What the Distributor Does:
The distributor routes high-voltage spark from the ignition coil to each cylinder in the correct firing order. It also houses the pickup coil (sensor) that tells the ECM where the engine is in its rotation.

Symptoms of a Failing Distributor:

Early Symptoms:

  • Hard starting, especially when warm
  • Rough idle
  • Engine stumble or hesitation under light throttle
  • Occasional misfires (P0300 codes)

Moderate Symptoms:

  • Engine cranks but won’t start
  • Backfiring through intake
  • Loss of power

Late-Stage/Failure:

  • No start at all
  • No spark at any plug wire

What Fails Inside the Distributor:

1. Pickup Coil/Hall Effect Sensor:
The magnetic sensor inside the distributor that signals the ECM. When it fails, the ECM can’t determine engine position and won’t fire the injectors or spark.

2. Cap and Rotor:
The cap and rotor are wear items. Carbon tracking inside the cap, burned rotor tips, and cracked caps cause misfires.

3. Distributor Shaft Bushing:
On high-mileage units, the shaft bushings wear, causing the rotor to wobble and create timing inconsistencies.

Diagnosis:

  1. Remove cap and inspect for carbon tracking, cracks, burned contacts
  2. Check rotor tip – should be metallic, not blackened
  3. Use a test light on the signal wire from the pickup coil – should flash when cranking
