Full-Size Chevy Towing Capacity Chart: By Year, Engine & Config

Towing capacity varies significantly by year, engine, cab/bed configuration, and axle ratio. This guide gives you a reference chart and explains how to find your truck’s specific rating.

How to Find Your Exact Tow Rating

  1. Check the towing guide in your glove box — Every GM truck came with a tow guide booklet that lists your specific truck’s rating based on VIN options
  2. Door jamb sticker — GVWR, GAWR, and tire info are there; GCWR determines your total towing capacity
  3. Online VIN decoder — GM’s vehicle history tool or third-party VIN decoders can pull your truck’s original order options
  4. Your engine + axle ratio combo matters most — A 5.3L with 3.73 gears rates differently than the same truck with 4.10 gears

Key Things That Affect Tow Capacity

  • Max Trailer Weight ≠ Safe Towing Weight — Stay at or under 80% of max for daily/highway towing
  • Tongue weight: Should be 10–15% of total trailer weight
  • Payload rating: Subtract passengers and cargo from your payload — the rest is available for tongue weight
  • Trailer brakes: Required for trailers over 6,000 lbs GVWR in most states
  • Weight distribution hitch: Required for trailers exceeding 60% of tow vehicle weight

Always set up your hitch, mirrors, and brake controller before heading out.
