The LLY Duramax (2004-2005) is specifically known for overheating under load — it was the first Duramax to get the larger injectors and more power, but the cooling system wasn’t upgraded to match. High EGTs on any Duramax under extended towing are also a major concern.
LLY OVERHEATING PROBLEM
- Factory thermostat opens too late — engine runs hot before cooling kicks in
- Factory radiator was undersized for the LLY’s increased heat output
- Common symptom: temp gauge climbing to 220–230°F under sustained load
- Fix: lower-temp thermostat, performance radiator, and correct coolant
EGT (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE) — WHY IT MATTERS
- EGT measures how hot the exhaust is leaving the cylinder
- High EGTs melt pistons, damage turbos, and burn injector tips
- Safe limit: sustained 1200°F, peak 1400°F
- Common causes of high EGT: restricted intake, restricted exhaust, low boost, fuel delivery issues
HOW TO LOWER EGTs
- Cold air intake — more air = cooler combustion
- Intercooler upgrade — cools the air charge before it enters the cylinder
- Up-pipe fix — factory up-pipes crack and leak hot exhaust before the turbo on LB7/LLY
- Lift pump — ensures adequate fuel delivery at WOT
- Tune — a good tow tune adds fuel timing to reduce EGT under load
EGT MONITORING
- Install a pyrometer (EGT gauge) — the single most important gauge for diesel towing
- Mount probe in the exhaust manifold before the turbo for most accurate reading
