Duramax Glow Plug Replacement: When to Replace, How to Remove Seized Plugs, and What to Buy

Duramax glow plugs are a routine maintenance item — but when they seize in the head, removal becomes a major repair. Knowing the replacement interval and having the right tools before they fail saves you from a much bigger headache.

WHEN TO REPLACE GLOW PLUGS

  • LB7/LLY: Replace at 100k miles or if hard-starting in cold weather
  • LBZ/LMM: Replace at 100k–150k miles
  • LML/L5P: These engines improved glow plug design, still inspect at 100k
  • Any time you have a glow plug trouble code (P0670 series)

SYMPTOMS OF FAILED GLOW PLUGS

  • Hard start when cold — multiple cranks needed below 32°F
  • White smoke on cold starts
  • Check engine light with P0671–P0678 (individual glow plug circuit fault)
  • Rough idle that clears up once the engine warms up

THE SEIZURE PROBLEM

  • Duramax glow plugs screw into aluminum heads
  • Heat cycles cause the plug to galvanically bond to the head
  • Forcing a seized plug shears the tip — creates a major extraction repair
  • Prevention: soak threads with penetrating oil for 24+ hours before removal

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

  • Apply PB Blaster or equivalent penetrating oil 24 hours before
  • Heat the area with a heat gun (NOT a torch) — expands aluminum, loosens plug
  • Use a properly fitting 10mm deep socket — don’t use an extension that puts sideways load
  • Slow, steady turning — never jerk
  • If seized: use an extractor kit rated for glow plug removal
