The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on LMM and LML Duramax trucks is a common source of problems after 100k+ miles. Owners face two choices: clean the DPF and keep it working, or delete it entirely. Here’s what you need to know about both.
WHAT THE DPF DOES
- Captures soot particles from the exhaust stream
- Periodically regenerates by burning off accumulated soot at high temperatures
- When regeneration fails or the filter clogs, codes and derate follow
DPF CLEANING
- Professional DPF cleaning (bake and blow method): $200–$400
- Removes accumulated soot and ash from the filter
- Works well if the filter is clogged but not cracked or melted
- Add CRC DPF Regenerator fuel additive to help maintain clean operation between services
DPF CLOGGING SYMPTOMS
- Frequent regeneration cycles (every 100–200 miles instead of 300+)
- Regen doesn’t complete — truck de-rates
- P2002 (DPF efficiency below threshold) or P242F (DPF restriction moderate)
- Excessive back pressure logged by the ECM
WHEN TO REPLACE
- If the DPF is cracked, melted, or past multiple cleanings — replacement is the only option
- OEM replacement is expensive ($1,500–$3,000)
- Aftermarket direct-fit units available for less
IMPORTANT NOTE
- DPF removal/deletion for off-road/racing use only — check all applicable regulations in your area
