  • US diesel has slightly less lubricity than European spec — the CP4 relies on fuel for internal lubrication
  • The pump’s internal roller fails without adequate lubrication
  • Failure sends metal fragments through injectors, fuel rails, and return lines

SYMPTOMS

  • Single hard crank event and then nothing — no restart
  • White/grey smoke before catastrophic failure
  • Loss of power with no warning
  • Fuel pressure code P0087

CONSEQUENCES

  • The entire fuel system must be cleaned or replaced — injectors, fuel lines, rails, low-pressure pump
  • Average repair cost: $8,000–$15,000 at a dealer
  • Entire high-pressure fuel system is contaminated

PREVENTION

  • Add a lift pump BEFORE the CP4 — increases inlet fuel pressure and lubricity
  • FASS and AirDog are the most proven options
  • Add a diesel fuel additive like Stanadyne to every tank — improves lubricity
