Hi folks. I am building out a FSC resource hub for us and I could use some input on it.
The first thing I am building is an RPO decoder.
The reason is pretty simple. Every time somebody asks if they have 3.42s or 4.10s, the answer is on a sticker in the glove box that is half faded and takes a bit of work to even see what they are looking at. This is the RPO code on my K2XX below for reference.
We are doing our own, with some contrast checks to make sure we can upload and adjust opacity as needed. There will be a built in OCR as well, that scans the codes. Free, no login (as it should be).
Here is what is on the to do list, roughly in the order I am building it.
RPO decoder. Type in your codes and get an answer in plain English for your year and platform. GM reused codes constantly. FG5 was Bilstein shocks in the early 90s and a FlexFuel badge later on. So everything gets checked against your model year instead of one big generic list (the only way it is possible).
Label reader. Take a picture of the RPO sticker in your glove box and it pulls the codes off the photo for you. It all runs in your browser. The photo does not get uploaded anywhere.
Tire, gear and speedo calculator. You went up two sizes, how far off is your speedo now, and what gear gets you back to where you were.
Fuel mileage log. Pick your engine from a dropdown, do the fill up math, and it keeps your last runs so you can see a trend instead of one number.
Quick identifiers. Engine RPO, axle code, AFM/DFM, transfer case. The stuff you need when you are standing at the parts counter.
One thing I will be up front about. The database is solid on some years and thinner on others, and the decoder will tell you which one you are looking at instead of guessing at you.
Here is where I could use help. What do you figure out on a napkin? If there is a calculation you do by hand every time, or a spec you go hunting for over and over, tell me. I would rather build what people actually use than what I think they will use.
I’ve made some progress with the RPO Decoder.
I have been searching for RPO databases for a few days now. Started out at 1,000 verified, then hit 18,000, now sitting just north of 24,000+ codes, sourced and tiered by how well we can back them up to official GM documentation.
I’m sure there is many to go, but at least its a start. I’ll be building out more tools out as spare time allows. We will make sure to collect any RPO’s that don’t exist in the database to another log; to try to circle back to get them.
We can either type the code to check one at time, or you can use a photo of the label + upload and OCR takes over.
I’m using my 2014 for reference, and we are close with the majority of its codes. We have to start with year of truck, as many codes were re-used over various model years.
There is contrast and opacity settings, to make sure you can adjust the photos. Built in OCR is linked up to the database, which then will give you a reading of the codes. Once the photo is uploaded, you can click Read the codes to gather the codes.

I ran 4 of my RPO’s thru it and did pretty good with it!
The newer trucks have QR on the B pillar by driver’s door. That’ll be a task for another day as I am feeling cross eyed after a few days building the RPO Decoder
Cool! Seemed to work real good for me! Took me a minute to find the tag in my glovebox but then I removed the owners manual and there it was!
