The 2014–2018 Silverado/Sierra 3500HD Dually is the ultimate K2XX platform for fifth wheel towing. Here’s how to set it up properly.
Why the 3500 Dually for Fifth Wheels?
- Factory fifth wheel prep package available (factory puck system)
- Higher GCWR than single rear wheel (SRW) trucks
- Better stability with heavy 5th wheel pin weights
- Higher payload ratings (up to 7,000 lbs on dually)
The Factory “Puck” System:
Many K2XX 3500 Duallies came with a factory fifth wheel prep package that includes 6 bolt locations (the “puck system”) in the bed. This allows a sliding fifth wheel hitch to mount without any drilling.
Best Fifth Wheel Hitch for K2XX:
Reese 5th Wheel Hitch – 20,000 lb Capacity – Compatible with K2XX trucks. Sliding head allows cab clearance on shorter cab-to-axle trucks.
Sliding vs Fixed Fifth Wheel:
- Regular cab: Fixed head works fine
- Extended cab: Sliding is recommended for clearance
- Crew cab short box: Sliding is mandatory
Hitch Installation:
For trucks with the factory puck system, installation is straightforward using the rail kit that attaches to the 6 existing bolt locations. For non-puck trucks, rails must be installed in the bed with appropriate hardware.
Brake Controller:
With heavy fifth wheel loads, a quality proportional brake controller is essential.
Proportional Trailer Brake Controller – Works with the K2XX factory 7-pin connector.
Weight Balance:
The fifth wheel pin weight (typically 15–20% of trailer weight) must stay within the truck’s payload rating. Check the door placard.
