Want more sound and performance from your 2014–2018 Silverado or Sierra with the 5.3L EcoTec3? A cold air intake is a great starting mod. Here’s what works best.
K2XX 5.3L Factory Airbox:
The EcoTec3 engine uses a two-stage air intake system with a filter in the fenderwell and a large airbox. It flows reasonably well from the factory.
Best Cold Air Intake Options:
K&N 57-3023-1 High-Flow Intake:
K&N 57-3023-1 for 4.8L/5.3L/6.0L Vortec Trucks – A proven intake that works well with the Gen V EcoTec3 trucks. High-flow oiled filter, aluminum tube, replaces factory airbox.
Expected Gains:
- 10–20 HP on a stock 5.3L
- Improved throttle response
- Better induction sound at WOT
- Better MPG in some driving conditions
Installation:
30–45 minute install. Remove factory airbox, install aluminum tube in same location. MAF sensor transfers from factory box to new tube.
K2XX-Specific Consideration:
The K2XX uses an electronic throttle with direct injection. A cold air intake that positions the filter away from engine heat provides better cold air charge, improving combustion efficiency.
Adding a Tune:
Pair the intake with a tune from DiabloSport or Edge for maximum gains. The ECM can be recalibrated to take advantage of the increased airflow.
Alternative: Dry Filter Intake
For dusty environments, consider an S&B dry filter intake. Easier to maintain and no re-oiling required.
