What Does a Cold Air Intake Do?
A cold air intake replaces the factory airbox with a high-flow filter element and smoother tubing that draws cooler, denser air into the engine. Benefits:
- Improved throttle response
- Modest horsepower/torque gains (5-15 HP typical)
- Better intake sound
- Improved fuel economy (in some conditions)
Realistic Expectations:
A cold air intake alone won’t transform your truck. For a naturally aspirated LS engine, expect 5-15 HP on a good dyno day. The improvement is most noticeable as sound and throttle response, not raw power.
For turbocharged engines (2.7T, 3.0 Duramax), cold air intakes can show more meaningful gains by reducing intake restriction.
Best Silverado Intakes:
For GMT800 5.3 (99-06), the K&N 57-3023-1 is the proven bolt-on.
For GMT900 6.2, the K&N 57-3070 provides the best flow gains.
For T1XX 6.2, the K&N 30-3110 is the purpose-built option.
Tuning Note:
For maximum gains from a cold air intake, pair it with a custom tune from HPT or EFI Live. A tune optimizes fuel trims, spark timing, and MAF calibration for the new intake, typically adding another 10-20 HP beyond the intake alone.
