Best Bolt-On Mods for GMT900 5.3 and 6.0 (Real Gains)

Best Bolt-On Mods for GMT900 5.3 and 6.0 — Real Gains Only

The GMT900 5.3L and 6.0L are solid platforms with real performance potential — but not every “upgrade” does what the marketing claims. Here’s an honest breakdown of what actually makes power on these trucks and what’s mostly just noise.

Stock Limitations

Before spending money, know what you’re working with:

  • The factory air intake is mildly restrictive but not a major bottleneck on its own
  • Exhaust manifolds are cast iron and flow reasonably well at stock power levels
  • The factory tune is conservative — it’s designed for reliability and emissions, not output
  • AFM and conservative spark timing leave real power on the table
  • The throttle response can feel sluggish, especially with AFM active

Mods That Actually Work

1. Custom ECU Tune — Biggest Bang for the Dollar

A proper custom tune is the single best return on investment for a GMT900:

  • Removes AFM (cylinder deactivation)
  • Optimizes fuel and ignition timing for your specific setup
  • Sharpens throttle response
  • Unlocks any power that was left on the table from the factory
  • Can be tailored for towing, performance, or fuel economy

Expected gain: 15–25 hp with tuning alone on a stock engine. More with supporting mods.

2. Long Tube Headers

Factory manifolds are adequate but upgraded headers improve flow significantly, especially when paired with a tune:

  • Best option: 1-7/8" long tube headers with a proper merge collector
  • Works well with a 3" exhaust
  • Not a huge gain on their own without a tune — the tune is required to take advantage of the improved flow
  • Headers alone without tuning are worth very little

Expected gain: 10–20 hp when paired with tune and exhaust.

3. 3-Inch Cat-Back or Full Exhaust

  • A quality 3" cat-back reduces backpressure
  • Better sound without drone (choose mid-range brands like Flowmaster, MBRP, or Corsa)
  • Works best as part of a full system (headers + tune + exhaust)
  • Minimal gain on its own — don’t expect more than 5–8 hp from exhaust alone

4. Cold Air Intake

Honest take: a quality CAI on a 5.3 gives 0–5 hp on its own. The sound difference is bigger than the power difference. Still, it’s a solid upgrade as part of a full package because it feeds cleaner, cooler air and gives the tune something to work with.

Note: Cheap intakes that route near the engine bay heat the incoming air and can actually hurt power. Spend on a quality unit or skip it.

Realistic Full Package Gains

Mod Gain
Tune alone 15–25 hp
Tune + intake 18–28 hp
Tune + intake + exhaust 20–32 hp
Full bolt-on (headers + tune + exhaust + intake) 25–45 hp

These are real-world estimates on a healthy stock engine.

Supporting Mods Worth Considering

  • AFM delete — do this before or alongside the tune
  • Upgraded spark plugs — NGK or ACDelco, properly gapped
  • Upgraded ignition coils — if you’re seeing misfires at WOT

Bottom Line

Don’t buy parts without a tune to support them. The tune is what unlocks everything. If you can only do one thing, do the tune. Everything else layers on top of a solid calibration.

Start with tune + AFM delete, then add exhaust and intake if you want to push further.
