Adding an amplifier to a GMT800 Silverado/Sierra brings the audio system to life. Here’s what you need to know.
Why an Amp for GMT800?
The factory GMT800 radio has 20-30W per channel output. That sounds okay on paper but in a loud truck cabin at highway speeds, it’s not enough for clean, undistorted audio.
An aftermarket amp with 50-100W per channel makes a massive difference — more headroom, less distortion, better bass response.
Choosing the Right Amp:
2-Channel Amp (Sub Only): 150–300W monoblock or 2-channel amp for a single subwoofer. Minimal wiring and integration.
4-Channel Amp (Full System): Powers all 4 door speakers with significant improvement. 50–100W per channel is plenty for door speakers.
5-Channel Amp (Full + Sub): Best all-in-one solution. Powers 4 speakers and a sub from a single unit.
Installation in GMT800:
- Run power wire from battery through the firewall
- Route under the door sill trim (remove sill panels)
- Mount amp in the extended cab area or under a seat
- Connect RCA signal wire from head unit preamp output
- Run speaker wire to each speaker location
- Connect remote turn-on wire from head unit
Backup Camera Add-On:
While running wires, it’s easy to also install a GLK License Plate Backup Camera — route the camera wire from the tailgate through the body to the head unit.
