If you’re shopping for a K2XX truck, you may have seen references to both AFM and DFM. Here’s what each system is and what changed between generations.
AFM (Active Fuel Management) – 2007–2018:
AFM deactivates 4 of 8 cylinders under light load. The system switches between V8 and V4 mode. Found on all 5.3L and some 6.2L engines in the K2XX (2014–2018).
DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) – 2019+:
An evolution of AFM that can run the engine in any combination of 2–8 cylinders (not just V4 or V8). Found in 2019+ T1XX trucks. Not present in the K2XX generation (2014–2018).
K2XX AFM Summary:
All K2XX trucks with the 5.3L EcoTec3 have AFM. When it fails, you’ll face the same lifter failure costs as the GMT900 generation – $1,500–$3,500 for repair.
Preventing AFM Issues on K2XX:
Range Technology RA003B AFM/DFM Disabler – Prevents the AFM system from cycling, keeping all 8 cylinders active at all times. Simple plug-and-play fix.
AFM Delete with Tune:
A tune-based AFM delete disables the system in the ECM permanently. This is the cleanest solution and is often included in performance tunes.
Oil Consumption and AFM:
Some K2XX owners with AFM report oil consumption between 1 qt / 3,000 miles. This is related to the AFM lifters allowing slight oil passage during the deactivation cycle. Disabling AFM often reduces oil consumption.
Bottom Line for K2XX Buyers:
Whether you buy a 5.3L or 6.2L K2XX, plan to address AFM at some point. The disabler is a cheap, easy first step.
Have you noticed AFM engagement on your K2XX? How’s your oil consumption?
