AFM Lifter Failure on 5.3 GMT900 – Symptoms & Fix

If you own a 2007–2013 Silverado or Sierra with the 5.3L V8, you’ve probably heard about the dreaded AFM (Active Fuel Management) lifter failures. This is one of the most common and expensive repairs on the GMT900 platform.

What Is AFM?
AFM deactivates 4 of the 8 cylinders under light load to save fuel. The system uses special collapsing lifters that can fail prematurely, especially between 80,000–150,000 miles.

Symptoms of AFM Lifter Failure:

  • Ticking or tapping noise from the engine, especially on startup
  • Misfires on cylinders 1, 4, 6, or 7 (the AFM cylinders)
  • Oil consumption – burning more than 1 qt per 1,000 miles
  • Check Engine light with codes P0300, P030X
  • Low oil pressure warning
  • Metal shavings in oil

Diagnosis:

  1. Pull codes with an OBD2 scanner
  2. Check oil level – AFM failures often cause excessive oil consumption
  3. Listen for lifter tick at idle – often louder when cold
  4. Check cylinder leak-down on AFM cylinders

The Fix:
The proper repair involves replacing all 16 lifters, the valley cover, and often the camshaft if there is lobe wear. Many owners delete the AFM system entirely during the repair.

Recommended Repair Kit:
AFM DOD Lifter Replacement Kit for 5.3L LS – Includes head gaskets, lifters, and guides for the complete repair.

Total Repair Cost:

  • DIY: $400–$800 in parts
  • Shop: $1,500–$3,500 depending on labor and parts

Prevention:
Run full synthetic oil at 5,000-mile intervals or less, and consider an AFM disabler to prevent lifter cycling. Many owners do this repair proactively around 100K miles.
