AFM Delete on a 5.3L GMT800: Why It Fails, How to Delete It, and What You Need

Active Fuel Management (AFM), also called Displacement on Demand (DoD), was introduced on 2007+ GMT800 trucks with the 5.3L LS engine. On high-mileage trucks it causes collapsed lifters, excessive oil consumption, and engine damage.

SYMPTOMS OF AFM FAILURE

  • Oil consumption of 1 quart or more per 1,000 miles
  • Ticking or knocking noise from the valley of the engine
  • Check engine light with misfire codes on cylinders 1, 4, 6, 7
  • Rough idle that gets worse over time

HOW AFM WORKS (AND FAILS)

  • AFM deactivates cylinders 1, 4, 6, 7 under light load to save fuel
  • Special AFM lifters use an internal oil pressure mechanism to collapse
  • Over time the oil passages in the lifter body get stuck — lifter doesn’t re-extend
  • Result: collapsed lifter, wiped cam lobe, metal debris in the oiling system

AFM DELETE OPTIONS

  • Software delete only: Use HPTuners or EFI Live to disable AFM in the tune — free if you already have a tuner. This stops the activation but the fragile AFM lifters are still in there.
  • Full mechanical delete: Replace all 16 lifters with standard LS7 or LS3 non-AFM lifters, swap the valley cover for a non-AFM version, and retune.

FULL DELETE STEPS

  1. Pull the intake manifold
  2. Remove the valley cover
  3. Drop the pushrods — label them if reusing
  4. Pull all 16 lifters — DO NOT mix up the bores
  5. Install LS7 or LS3 solid or standard lifters
  6. Install a non-AFM valley cover (no solenoids)
  7. Reassemble with new intake gaskets
  8. Tune out AFM with HPTuners or EFI Live
