10-Speed Shudder on T1XX – How to Fix It

The 10-speed 10L80 automatic transmission in the 2019+ T1XX Silverado/Sierra has a documented shudder issue that’s one of the most common complaints on this platform. Here’s the cause and fix.

What Is the 10L80 Shudder?
A vibration or shudder felt at 40–65 mph under light to moderate throttle. The sensation is like driving briefly over rumble strips. It’s caused by TCC (torque converter clutch) behavior in the 10-speed.

Root Cause:
The 10L80 uses an aggressive TCC engagement strategy to maximize fuel efficiency. The clutch material and/or calibration can cause it to slip slightly before full lockup, creating the vibration.

GM TSB and Software Updates:
GM has issued multiple technical service bulletins (TSBs) for the 10-speed shudder. Dealers can flash updated TCM calibrations that modify TCC engagement parameters.

Step 1: Dealer TCM Update
If your truck is still within warranty or powertrain coverage, a dealer calibration update is free and often resolves the shudder.

Step 2: Complete Fluid Service
A complete transmission fluid drain and refill with fresh Dexron VI often reduces shudder caused by fluid degradation.
ACDelco Dexron VI ATF – OEM-specified. The 10L80 holds approximately 12–13 quarts total.

Step 3: Lubegard Shudder Fixx
Lubegard Instant Shudder Fixx – Add to the fluid after service to address TCC friction issues.

What Doesn’t Help:
Replacing the transmission unit without addressing calibration or fluid will result in the same shudder.
