The T1XX generation (2019+) brought a complete redesign of the Silverado and Sierra platform — new body, updated powertrains including the 2.7T turbocharged four-cylinder, the 3.0L Duramax inline-six diesel, and the 10-speed automatic across most variants. Here are the known issues to watch for.
Engine Issues
2.7T Turbocharged 4-Cylinder (RPO L3B)
- Oil consumption — Some early 2019–2021 2.7T engines have reported above-average oil consumption. GM has acknowledged elevated consumption on some early units — have a dealer check for any current service bulletins before assuming it’s within the “normal” range.
- Turbo lag feel — Not a defect, but owners expecting V8 throttle response are sometimes caught off guard; a tune or pedal booster improves response.
- Timing chain noise — Some 2.7T owners have reported timing chain rattle on cold start; check for TSB coverage.
5.3L EcoTec3 L84 (T1XX version)
- DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) replaces AFM — Uses 17 cylinder-deactivation patterns vs. the 4 on AFM. Same lifter-failure risk. The Range Technology RA003B is the plug-in AFM/DFM disabler that covers 2019+ L84/L87 trucks.
- Direct injection carbon buildup — Same as K2XX; walnut-blast service every 60K–80K.
6.2L L87
- Generally very reliable; most issues are DFM-related like the 5.3L.
Transmission Issues — 10L80 / 10L90 10-Speed
The 10-speed automatic is the most talked-about issue on T1XX trucks.
Common complaints:
- Hunting between gears at steady highway speed
- Harsh low-speed shifts (1–2 and 2–3 especially when cold)
- Shudder at light throttle
- Hesitation when pulling out from a stop
Fixes:
- GM dealer TCM calibration update — multiple software revisions have been released; always worth checking for updates.
- Fluid drain and refill — use only DEXRON ULV, the ultra-low-viscosity fluid these 10-speeds are designed for. Do not substitute the thicker DEXRON HP used in GM’s 8-speed transmissions — it is not the correct spec for the 10L80/10L90.
- Custom tune — an HPT MPVI4 with a skilled tuner can significantly improve 10-speed shift quality.
Infotainment Issues
- 2019–2021 Silverado: First-gen infotainment had reliability complaints — freezing screens, audio dropouts.
- 2022+ Silverado: Improved significantly; Google Built-In available on higher trims.
- Fix for older units: Dealer software update, or head-unit replacement under extended warranty if applicable.
Body & Fit Issues
- 2019 Silverado interior complaints — The 2019 redesign dropped some interior features relative to K2XX (center dash storage, etc.) — not a defect, but worth knowing.
- Door alignment — some early T1XX trucks had door-gap inconsistencies; usually a warranty dealer fix.
- Tailgate latch sticking — Reported on the MultiPro tailgate (2019+ Sierra); check for dealer TSB coverage.
Recommended Preventive Actions
- Disable AFM/DFM with the Range Technology RA003B plug-in disabler.
- Check for 10-speed TCM software updates at the dealer.
- Walnut-blast the DI intake valves around 60K miles.
- Run full synthetic oil at the specified grade and change on schedule.
