The P0521 oil pressure sensor code can appear on K2XX trucks with the EcoTec3 5.3L or 6.2L. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it.
What P0521 Means on K2XX:
P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance. The ECM detected oil pressure outside the expected range for current conditions.
Is It the Sensor or Actual Low Pressure?
This is the critical question. Before replacing the sensor, verify actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
Most Common Cause: Failing Sensor
On the EcoTec3 engine, the oil pressure sensor (located near the oil filter or on the engine block) can develop an internal resistance drift, causing it to report pressure values outside the expected range.
Replacement Sensor:
GM Genuine Parts D1818A Oil Pressure Sensor (19244505) – OEM replacement. Fits 2007–2014 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 engines.
For 2014+ EcoTec3 (Gen V):
The Gen V EcoTec3 has a different sensor design than Gen III/IV. Confirm the correct part number for your specific year.
Installation:
- Disconnect negative battery terminal
- Locate sensor (varies by engine – check service manual for Gen V location)
- Remove old sensor with oil pressure sensor socket
- Apply thread sealant to new sensor
- Install and torque to spec (12–15 ft-lbs)
- Clear codes, test drive
Oil Change Connection:
Some owners notice P0521 appearing shortly after an oil change. This can be caused by low oil level, wrong viscosity, or an oil pressure sensor that was disturbed during the oil change.
