P0521 Oil Pressure Sensor on GMT900 5.3 – Fix Guide

The P0521 code (Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance) is a common code on the 2007–2013 GMT900 5.3L V8. It can trigger the oil pressure warning light and may be accompanied by a “Low Oil Pressure” message in the DIC. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it.

What P0521 Means:
The ECM is detecting that the oil pressure reading from the oil pressure sensor is not within the expected range for current engine conditions. This could be:

  • A failing oil pressure sensor (most common cause)
  • Actual low oil pressure (more serious)
  • Wiring issue to the sensor

Symptoms:

  • Check Engine light with P0521
  • Oil pressure gauge reading unexpectedly low or high
  • “Low Oil Pressure” warning in DIC (verify with a mechanical gauge first before assuming it’s sensor failure)
  • Engine oil pressure warning light

Diagnosis Steps:

  1. Check oil level first – low oil can cause actual low pressure
  2. Check oil condition – dark, sludged oil reduces pressure
  3. Use a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify actual pressure
  4. If actual pressure is normal but sensor reads low/high, the sensor is the issue

The Fix:
If actual oil pressure is confirmed normal (25 PSI at idle, 45+ PSI at cruise), replace the oil pressure sensor.

How to Replace:

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
  2. Locate sensor (driver side of engine block, near oil filter on most 5.3L applications)
  3. Unplug electrical connector
  4. Use 27mm oil pressure sensor socket to remove
  5. Apply small amount of thread sealant to new sensor threads
  6. Install new sensor – torque to 12 ft-lbs
  7. Reconnect connector and battery
  8. Clear codes, test drive
