The GMT800 (1999–2006) center console lid is one of the most common interior failures on these trucks. The plastic hinge cracks, the foam pad splits, and the vinyl tears. Here’s the fix.
Identifying the Problem
The factory console lid uses a plastic hinge integrated into the lid itself. When this hinge snaps — and it will snap on most high-mileage GMT800s — the lid flops open and won’t stay latched.
The foam pad underneath the vinyl is also prone to compression and splitting after 15+ years.
The Fix: Replacement Console Lid
Replacement console lids for GMT800 are available on Amazon and from GM parts suppliers for $30–70. The replacement typically comes as a complete assembly (foam, vinyl cover, and hinge mechanism).
Installation:
- Open the console lid and locate the hinge pins
- Remove the two hinge pins (small flathead screwdriver or snap ring pliers)
- Lift out the old lid
- Drop in the new lid and reinstall pins
- Test the hinge and latch function
