Fuel filter maintenance is one of the most critical — and most often neglected — service items on a Duramax diesel. Unlike gasoline engines, diesel fuel contains more contaminants and water, and the fuel system operates at pressures 5-10x higher than gasoline injection.
THE TWO-FILTER SYSTEM
- LML and earlier Duramax trucks use TWO fuel filters:
- Primary filter (TP3012/TP3018): Under the hood, in the fuel filter housing — catches large particles
- Secondary filter: Inline, between the lift pump and injection pump — catches fine particles
- Both must be replaced together — skipping one defeats the purpose
REPLACEMENT INTERVAL
- Every 20,000–25,000 miles under normal conditions
- Every 10,000–15,000 miles if towing heavily, using bio-diesel, or in humid climates
- Replace immediately if the water-in-fuel warning light comes on
WATER IN FUEL WARNING
- Duramax trucks have a water-in-fuel sensor in the primary filter housing
- Diesel absorbs water — especially in humid climates or during seasonal temperature swings
- Water must be drained from the filter housing — there’s a drain valve at the bottom
- Never ignore the water-in-fuel light — water destroys injectors
FILTER HOUSING INSPECTION
- Inspect the O-rings on the filter housing lid every change
- Cracked or hard O-rings cause air ingestion — hard starts and injector damage
- AC Delco filter housings come with new O-rings
