Rotted floor pans are one of the most common issues on 1973–1987 C10s. The good news is that floor pan replacement is a manageable DIY job if you have basic welding skills. Here’s the complete guide.

Assessing the Damage:
Before buying any parts, determine how much pan needs replacing:

  • Pull up the carpet and remove the seats
  • Check the driver and passenger side floor pans
  • Check the trans tunnel and cab corners
  • Poke with a screwdriver – soft or holed areas need full replacement

Options for Repair:

Option 1: Patch Panels (Localized Rust)
For smaller rust spots (12" x 12" or less), cut out the bad metal and weld in sheet metal patches. 18-gauge steel works for most floor pan sections.

Option 2: Full Floor Pan Sections
Reproduction floor pan sections are available for the 73–87 C/K trucks (driver side, passenger side, or full floor). These are the cleanest repair option.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Angle grinder with cutting wheels and flap discs
  • MIG welder (preferred) or flux-core welder
  • 3M Weld-Thru Coating II – Zinc Based Primer – Apply to mating surfaces before welding to prevent future rust between panels
  • Body hammer and dollies
  • Seam sealer for finishing

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Remove seats, carpet, and sound deadening
  2. Mark the cut lines (leave 1" overlap with good metal)
  3. Cut out the rusted pan section with angle grinder
  4. Clean up the remaining edges – grind to bare shiny metal
  5. Apply weld-thru primer to both mating surfaces
  6. Fit new panel – clamp and tack weld in place
  7. Finish welding with stitch welds (avoid warping)
  8. Grind welds smooth
  9. Apply seam sealer to all seams on top and bottom
  10. Prime and paint underside before installing carpet

  • Not treating the mating surfaces before welding (causes rust to return)
  • Using too-thin metal for patch panels
  • Leaving factory seam sealer intact – it holds moisture
