What Is a Weight Distribution Hitch?
A WDH transfers some of the tongue weight from the rear of the tow vehicle to all four wheels, restoring the truck’s level stance and improving steering and braking control.
When Do You Need One?
- Tongue weight over 500 lbs (or over 10% of trailer weight)
- Tow vehicle rear sags when attached to trailer
- Steering feels light/vague with trailer attached
- Most manufacturers recommend WDH for trailers over 6,000 lbs
Types:
Round Bar (Most Common):
Trunnion bar WDH systems use steel bars that flex under tension to redistribute weight. Popular brands include Equal-i-zer, Reese Pro, and Husky.
Sway Control:
Many WDH systems include integrated sway control, which resists trailer sway and is especially important for large box trailers and RVs.
Choosing the Right Capacity:
Match the WDH tongue weight capacity to your tongue weight:
- 600–800 lbs tongue weight: 800 lb WDH
- 800–1,200 lbs tongue weight: 1,200 lb WDH
- 1,200–1,600 lbs tongue weight: 1,600 lb WDH
Brake Controller Pairing:

Installation:
WDH systems require proper ball height. The trailer coupler must be within 3" of the hitch ball height for the WDH bars to work properly.
